ACTRA NL celebrates member Jill Snowden on International Women’s Day

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Friday, March 6, 2015

St. John’s – ACTRA Newfoundland will be shining the local spotlight on Jill Snowden this International Women’s Day, on March 8.
Jill was the very first member of ACTRA NL; her number is 001!

Born in London, England, Jill moved to Newfoundland with her husband and two very young children in 1964. In those early days, with a background in acting and teaching, Jill worked with producer Paul O’Neill on CBC Radio School Broadcasts. In February, 1965 when the first ACTRA branch in Newfoundland was formed Jill became the first member of the branch and at that meeting was elected the first President of the ACTRA Newfoundland Branch. Jill went on to work at Memorial University for the next 30 years while still maintaining her interest in performing. After her retirement from MUN, Jill moved back into performing and has worked on many productions here over the past 10 years, many of which have been films with emerging producers and directors.

“The industry has grown tremendously. It is great to see the films, TV shows and short films provide so much work opportunity now,” Snowden says, “I love being on set. It gets me out and it gets me socializing. It’s a lot of fun. I’m so glad to see a film industry here. It makes life so much more interesting.”

Local filmmaker Roger Maunder says “Jill Snowden has given so much of her time and talent over the years. She’s helped so many aspiring and experienced Filmmakers through so many different programs such as NIFCOs First Time Film Maker’s program. She is a talent that shines and I’ve been proud to have had the opportunity to work with her.”

ACTRA (Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television and Radio Artists) is the national organization of professional performers working in the English-language recorded media in Canada. ACTRA represents the interests of 22,000 members across Canada – the foundation of Canada’s highly acclaimed professional performing community.
